FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

MAINTENANCE

  • 1. Constancy is key. Make sure you are cleaning and checking your water chemistry weekly. Buy test strips

    2. Buy a good vacuum

    3. BACKWASH regularly. Once a week.

    4. Run your pump for at least 12 hours a day. We recommend 24/7

    5. Understand water pressure. Check your pressure gauge regularly, it should be around 15psi (depending on your system)

    6. Know your pump. Understand what it looks like to be
running at full capacity. Some pumps can be temperamental, learn how to prime it and keep it running efficiently.

    7. ALWAYS TURN OFF YOUR HEATER BEFORE STOPPING PUMP. Shut off heater and wait a few minutes before
stopping pump. Stopping your pump suddenly can melt your pipes.

    8. Never put chlorine pucks in your skimmer if you have a
 heater.

    9. Make sure to never add too much salt to your pool, you WILL corrode your pump and heater. Always use test strips.

    10. Always shut off your pump before changing your filter
settings (The water pressure can damage you filter)

  • Backwashing is the process of cleaning your filter and should be done once a week after vacuuming.

First shut off your pump and clear any debris from your skimmer basket and pump basket.

Next roll your backwash hose out to the road and set your filter valve to the “backwash” setting.

Then start your pump again and watch the water wash through your filter from the “view glass” attached to where the hose is connected.

You should see the view glass fill with white, dirty water (this is the filter being cleaned).

You should backwash for approximately 1 minute or until you see that clear water is now running through the view glass (this means the filter is clean).

Now you will need to shut the pump off again and turn the filter valve to “rinse” (you should never turn the filter valve while the pump is running).

“Rinsing” clears any remaining dirty water left in the lines before filtering back to the pool. Start your pump and rinse for another 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Make sure the water flowing through your view glass is running clear and return your filter valve to “filter.”

MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS TURN OFF PUMP BEFORE TURUNG FILTER VALVE!

  • Make sure you are keeping up with regular weekly maintenance and testing the chemical balance in the pool. Stabilizer and PH/alkalinity levels are important to insure your chlorine is being used efficiently to kill bacteria.

After balancing your water apply a concentrated algaecide as directed by the instructions on the bottle. Be sure to run your pump 24 hours a day until the problem is resolved and backwash regularly.

If you have tried everything and your pool is still green you should have your water tested digitally to diagnose the problem.

  • Pool chemicals all work together.

    “Balancing” means that
your chemicals are working together to achieve ideal swimming conditions.
If your levels are too high or too low it will decrease the efficiency of your chlorine from killing bacteria. Unbalanced water can also damage your liner
 and corrode pumps and heaters.

    Ideal pool chemistry is:
    - pH: 7.2-7.8 ppm

    - Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm

    - Calcium Hardness,180-220 ppm

    - Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30-50 ppm

    - Chlorine levels should remain constant in the 1-3 ppm range.

  • The most common problem is unbalanced salt levels.

Use salt test strips to test “parts per million” in your water. The ideal salt level is between 2700-3400 ppm, with 3200 ppm being optimal (read your cells manual as some cells operate at different ppm).

Make sure to always use test strips as your digital display readings may not always be accurate. Always calibrate your digital display to test strip readings (read calibration instructions in manual).

If your Salt levels are ok it could be that you cell needs to be cleaned. Shut off pump, remove cell & disconnect it from it’s power source and let it soak in a solution muriatic acid and water for 15 minutes (5 parts water:1 part acid). Rinse Cell and reconnect.

Salt cells have a life span of 10,000 hours (around 5 years) so if your cell is still not working maybe its time to replace it.

  • There are some pros and cons to both but I will start off by saying that salt
is NOT an alternative to chlorine, it's just a different method of chlorination.
Salt alone does nothing for you pool. What happens is that your salt cell generates chlorine from the sodium chloride (salt) in your water. It is a
process of auto-chlorination. Using salt can be easier to manage IF everything is working as it should be. It is so important to understand how
your salt system works because improper use can lead to damages. Salt is
corrosive and WILL damage your pump and heater if ppm is too high. Using
test strips and calibrating your cell are vital to avoid damages and to insure your cell is working properly. Cells need to be cleaned every 3 months or they
will stop working and they do not generate chlorine in water temperatures
 cooler than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

That being said using salt is softer on the skin and is a cheaper alternative to chlorine concentrates. Chemical balancing is a bit easier to maintain with
salt water but pH levels tend to be higher so its still important to keep up with regular testing. Salt offers a more regulated method of chlorine distribution
allowing your pool to operate at much more stable chlorine levels. Although
salt systems do come with savings, conversion is expensive and cells need to
be replaced after every 10,000 hours of use (around 5 years). Cells using a
cartridge will need to be replaced every year.

Using a chlorine concentrate can be a little more straight forward for
homeowners. Salt systems require troubleshooting that some people don’t
have the patience for. Shocking your pool once a week and using chlorine
pucks is as easy as it gets, although it requires more consistency. It’s true
concentrated chlorine is a little harsher on the skin than salt is, but skin irritation is often the result of pH imbalance rather than chlorine. Be sure to
always balance and test your water. Using chlorine is more expensive and is
more difficult to store and transport. It has a strong smell and can stain your clothes.

Consider these facts and decide what is best for you.

LINER REPLACEMENT

  • Liner replacement is a three step process and takes around 3 to 6 weeks. Turn around time is based on manufacturing. The first step is to drain the pool, cut out the old liner, and measure for the new one.
It’s best to do it this way because measurements are more accurate and we’re able to asses the condition of the pool walls. There may be rusting and
concrete damage to account for so this should be addressed before the new
liner arrives. Your pool will sit empty for 3-6 weeks until your new liner is
 made.

For the second step our team will arrive with the new liner, finish final prep
work & install it. This will take a few hours depending on the size of your pool. Upon completion a vinyl vacuum is needed to secure the liner in place while the pool is refilled with water. The vacuum MUST be left on until water has reached 1ft into the shallow end. This can take all night but it’s very
important. Once the water has reached 1ft into the shallow end you can stop
the water, unplug the vacuum and give us a call (there will also be a sticker
 placed where to stop filling).

The final step is done once the pool has been filled 1ft into the shallow end
and vacuum is shut off. Our team returns and removes the vacuum and
completes finishing touches. All the faceplates for your skimmer, return jets, and lights are removed during the process of installing the new liner so it is at
this time that we install new ones and cut them into the liner. After the new faceplates are installed we do a final clean up and we are done. You can now fill the pool to operating level and enjoy your brand new pool!

  • Liners nowadays last around 8-10 years. Some of the signs that your liner may need to be replaced are:

    - Fading

    - Wrinkles

    - Brittle when you touch it

    - Leaks that have already had been patched

If your liner has these symptoms we strongly recommend that you consider
replacing it soon. Use your judgment to decide how much longer it has but in
reality it can have a failure at any time. Failing liners also cause damage to the
frame of the pool that you can’t necessarily see until its too late (corrosion,
cracking concrete etc.). It’s better to budget for it and get it done early to
account for these potential complications. Liner replacement is more
difficult later in the season due to cold weather and manufacturing times.

  • The best time to replace your liner is early spring right
 when you open your pool.

This gives time for manufacturing to be done so your new liner can be installed in time for summer. It’s not recommended to install a new liner at the end of the season because it is too cold for the vinyl to stretch into place.

  • Wrinkles in the liner can be caused by a few things.

Usually wrinkles are caused by excessive ground water surrounding the pool wall. Sometimes this can be fixed by pumping out water from behind the liner, although some wrinkles may still remain.

Another cause of wrinkles in your liner may just be age and chemical damage. If you know your liner is old and starting to wrinkle we suggest you start to think about replacing it soon. It’s better to replace it before it rips and causes complications.

SAFTEY COVERS

  • Safety covers offer the ultimate protection for both
your pool and your pets and family. They look much better than a tarp cover and make opening and closing your pool a much easier experience.

    Apart from this, they also
save you money! The polypropylene mesh allows water to pass through the
cover while filtering out dirt. Your pool will naturally fill up over the winter, saving you from having to pay to fill it up every year. Over time the cover will pay for itself.

  • First your pool is measured and your safety cover is custom fitted to your pool. Manufacturing will take 3-6 weeks.

    Then the cover is
installed by drilling retractable brass anchors into your deck that support the straps (3ft apart). These anchors screw up and down and are flush to the deck while the pool is open. To close, the anchors screw out and the straps are secured and then tightened to ensure the cover
is taut and can support safety cover standards. We always test the quality of
installation by walking across it after we finish.

  • Yes your safety cover is designed top support a minimum of 485lbs.

Although you are able to walk on it its not recommended to be walking on it regularly. Its purpose is to protect your pool and prevent loved ones from falling in, not to be walked on.

  • Safety covers are very susceptible to pests. Mice like to nest in them
over the summer and often chew holes in them.

To avoid this problem it’s recommended to store them somewhere safe. You can store them on a high
shelf or hang it up if your garage, or even keep them in your house. Basically you just need to prevent pests from chewing holes in them and you will
enjoy your new safety cover for a long time.

LEAK & REPAIR

  • We suggest you shut off pump for 24 to 48 hours to determine whether water is being lost from the liner inside to pool or from the plumbing underground.

If you are still losing water with pump off, water is being lost from the liner. You will need to call for a dive test.

If you retain water with the pump shut off you are losing water somewhere underground and will need to call for a pressure test.

  • A technician equipped with scuba gear will perform “dive test” in your pool using sonic leak detection methods to locate and repair any leak found in the pool.

    DIVE TEST COST: $250.00

  • A pressure test is done using a pressure gauge and combination of water
and air shot directly into both suction and return lines to determine
 where water is being lost.

Then using our leak detection equipment
we can locate the leak. The difficulty of this job can vary but typically it can be done in less that two hours.

PRESSURE TEST COST: $200.00, then $50.00 per hour after 1hour (example: if job takes 2 hours you will be charged $250.00).

  • A leak underground is first detected with a pressure test
 then located using various methods.

    Once detected our team of
technicians will dig down and assess the plumbing failure causing
your leak. Usually the leak is found underneath your pool deck
requiring us to remove a part of it to access the leak. Concrete decks usually require us to cut into it, while patio stones can be removed more easily.

Leaks can usually be fixed by
replacing a fitting or by replacing some old pipe. Our prices are based on labour only, the cost of new parts are not included but
will not effect the price by much.

After the repair is done we always leave the hole open for a few days to ensure that you are no longer losing water. Once we are satisfied that the leak has stopped, we will return to
fill the hole and patch your concrete or restore your patio stones

    DIG/REPAIR COST - Concrete deck $800.00

 Interlock deck $675.00
Grass: $450.00 *Cost is for labour only

OPENING/CLOSING

  • Please make sure there is power to the pool equipment as we need to test your pump. You may need to reset
the breaker if you have switched it off for the winter. Also have your garden hose hooked up so we can use it to clean and fill your pool as we work.

Leave any side gates, storage sheds or pool houses
unlocked if we need to access pool equipment. And if you
have a dog, please keep them inside and pick up any poo in the backyard.

    Our staff will thank you.

  • Please have you cover and winterizing plugs
outside or easily accessible. Makes sure we have access to outside power outlets and garden hose. Leave any side gates, storage
sheds or pool houses unlocked if we need to access pool
 equipment.

Although cleaning is offered in our service its important
that you balance your water and do your best to clean the pool before we arrive. Your pool water needs to be balanced in order to stay clean clean throughout the winter. We recommend that you run
your pump and keep up with regular maintenance until your closing date.

If you have a dog, please keep them inside and pick up
 any poo in the backyard.

    Our staff will thank you.
